    Dear EQnetworkers,

In Chirala N B V SUBRAMANYAM tells during the second meeting what he knows of the problems in education in India. He is the vice president of the Rahul Educational society and director of Rahul Public school and Little Racals play school.
    He tells us:
"In India (Andra Pradesh)there are two types of schools i.e. English Medium Schools where pupils have to learn mathematics, physics and science in a non native language, English instead of there mother language. But the government does not establish English medium schools. So individuals establish schools according to the tendencies. The parents are mad of English Medium Schools because there is a wrong notion that students who study in these schools will get good jobs. But the pupils have to memorize all the knowledge meaningless as the medium of instruction is in non native.
Pupils have to practice the lessons all the day. They are neither interested in the lessons nor in the school. They just stare at the books. The teaching is not interactive. Instead bores the child, kills his creativity...
They have to reproduce this knowledge in examination. This knowledge they develop is passive. For a short time pupils can reproduce it but they not can use it active. There is no clear interpretation, no real understanding, no insight or any real creative learning effects. Memorizing is not the same as a conscious learning process, because it is meaningless."
"Because there are 18 languages recognized by the constitution in India, learning only one native language will also give problems for the pupils and for society. For communication between people in India there have to be a linguistic medium all Indians can use. In India this medium is English. Indian society is asking for English speaking participation and employment. If you like to earn a job, you have to speak English well. Because that English is one of the linguistic learning objects in school, society and business."

Children go to school six days a week 9 hours a day. They are brave, they have to learn for there future and they know that well. No time to play. Is this efficient?

    Warm regards from Chirala,
    Gowri, Dhyan and Jyotsna
