About the BarOn Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-iTM)

Based on seventeen years of research by Dr. Reuven Bar-On and tested on over 33,000 individuals worldwide, the BarOn Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-iTM) is the first scientifically developed and validated measure of emotional intelligence.
Emotional intelligence reflects one's ability to deal with daily environment challenges and helps predict one's success in life, including professional and personal pursuits. A growing body of research suggests that emotional intelligence, measured by Emotional Quotient (EQ), is a better predictor of "success" than the more traditional measures of cognitive intelligence (IQ).

What does the BarOn EQ-i measure?
The BarOn EQ-i consists of 133 items and takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. It is based on the most comprehensive theory of emotional intelligence to date and renders an overall EQ score as well as scores for the following 5 composite scales and 15 subscales:
    Intrapersonal Scales
    • Self-Regard
    • Emotional Self Awareness
    • Assertiveness
    • Independence
    • Self-Actualization

    Interpersonal Scales
    • Empathy
    • Social Responsibility
    • Interpersonal Relationship

    Adaptability Scales
    • Reality Testing
    • Flexibility
    • Problem Solving

    Stress Management Scales
    • Stress Tolerance
    • Impulse Control

    General Mood Scales
    • Optimism
    • Happiness
These important areas of emotional intelligence are measured accurately with the aid of 4 validity indices and a sophisticated correction factor.

How can the BarOn EQ-i be used?
The BarOn EQ-i can be employed in many ways and in a variety of settings. It is appropriate for use in corporate, clinical, educational, medical and research settings. Potential users of the EQ-i include human resources professionals, organizational development consultants, career counselors, guidance counselors, psychologists, psychiatrists, physicians, and social workers.

The BarOn EQ-i can be used by organizations for screening as part of the recruiting process to aid in identifying potentially successful employees. It can also be employed in identifying those emotional and social skills that are important to develop in employee training programs, team building, and in enhancing managerial competencies at work.
Research indicates that there is a strong correlation between emotional intelligence and job performance. You can even create a profile of the top performers in your organization to determine what skills are most valuable in your company or for any particular position.
Skills associated with emotional intelligence develop throughout life and can be improved through training, making the BarOn EQ-i a valuable instrument for identifying potential areas for improvement and for measuring the effectiveness of organizational development programs.

    BarOn EQ-i Reports
Currently there are two methods of scoring the BarOn EQ-i.
You may choose to use our Mail-In Scoring Service in which you purchase pre-paid scoring answer sheets. Once a client has filled out the questionnaire, the answer sheet is returned to us and we will score and produce the report you requested and return it to you via mail (expedited services are available).
Based on the volume of scoring you do, or your need to have reports quickly, we also offer a computerized limited use scoring program for your desk/laptop. PeopleProTM and PsychManagerTM for WindowsTM will administer, score, and produce BarOn EQ-i reports right in your office minutes after an administration!

    Individual Summary Report
The Individual Summary Report provides, in a four-page graphical format, the overall EQ score plus scores for each of the 5 composite scales and the 15 subscales, and validity indicator results.

    Development Report
The 8-10 page Development Report includes the scores provided in the Individual Summary Report as well as an in-depth narrative explanation of the meaning of the scores, where the individual strengths and weaknesses lie, and suggestions on how to improve emotional intelligence.

    Resource Report
The optional color report presents BarOn EQ-i scores in a manner conducive to development, coaching, and counseling. Ideally used when the results are shared with the respondent, the report omits numerical scores, and uses terminology like "Needs Improvement", "Effective Training", and "Highly Effective". The separate counselor's report contains all numerical scores, validity information, and a profile summary.

    Group Report
The 15-18 page Group Report, available when three or more BarOn EQ-i's are submitted, provides an anonymous summary of the emotional intelligence for a group of respondents. This report can be used to identify areas in which the group as a unit or department can benefit from training and development.
